Description
Two woodcuts, publ. Wittenberg. Strong impression. Illustrations of an influential pamphlet "Deuttung der zwo grewlichen || Figuren Bapstesels zu Rom vnd Munchkalbs || zu Freyberg jn Meyssen funden" written by Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon in which they present monsters as criticism on monastic institutions and their papal overlords. The pamphlet combines 2 monsters: the creatures they called the Papal Ass and the Monk Calf.
