Description
folio, contemp. quarter calf (covers rubbed, corners rounded and defect.), gilt titled red morocco label on upper cover, gilt. orn. spine on 5 raised bands (rubbed, joints locally split.), [2] pp., 101 pl. (portrait and dedic. fox., marg. fox. and brown. throughout).  19th-c. ed. on vellum paper, without text (1st printing 1778). Contains a mezzotint frontisp.-portrait of Ch. Rogers engr. by W.W. Ryland after J. Reynolds, a printed titlep., a calligr. engr. dedication to King George III and 102 engr. on 99 pl., some in colours or monochrom, by Bartolozzi, Cipriani, Ryland, Watts and others after drawings of mainly Italian artists (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Correggio, the Carracci, Reni...) but also after Poussin, Rembrandt, Boucher, Rubens, etc., from the collections of Rogers himself, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Hudson, etc. Charles Rogers (1711–1784) was an art collector and connoisseur, a friend of H. Walpole, J. Reynolds, A. Pond and other prominent men of his days; his considerable art collection included many prints and drawings. Ownership label I.J. Sheldon.
