dark patina, 30 x 10 x 10 cm incl. pedestal; not signed, fragment of an old ms. identification label pasted in the pedestal. Very good condition.
Nice representation of Frederick William, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1771-1815), German prince and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Oels, a military officer nicknamed "The Black Duke". The Duke was a harsh opponent of Napoleon Bonaparte's occupation of his native Germany. When Napoleon returned to the political scene in 1815 during the Hundred Days, Frederick William raised fresh troops. He was killed by a gunshot at the Battle of Quatre Bras (at Genappe near Waterloo) on 16 June 1815.
