Description
Interesting account of Folkestone 1914-1917. During World War I the town became host to some 65000 Belgian refugees fleeing the conflict. Images of trenches, Collège belge, Bureaux belges, the parish church, life at the beach, the American gardens, fishing, the fishmarket, fishermen, the harbour station, the grand fleet, the harbour, English recruits, Canadian soldiers who were based in Folkestone, firemen, derby recruiting, the environment, fox hunting, the bombing of May 25th 1917, the catching of a shark, the departure of the boat "Victoire", Folkestones Royal Pavilion Hotel (most of the building was demolished in 1981-2), Lower Sandgate Road, Queen's Hotel (pulled down in 1963), Grace Hill, the Pier, images of a heavy storm, walks, mackerel fishing, etc. Most of the slides with a handwritten legend.
