Description
London, Batsford, [1936] 8vo, orig. photo-ill. paper covered boards, photo-ill. endpapers, 63 pp. Good copy. First ed. with 63 black and white photographic reproductions by the British photographer and photojournalist B. Brandt (1904-1983) known for his images of British society. In his first book Brandt shows the disparities between the wealthy and the working class by pairing pictures in a particular and subtle way as we can see on the cover of the book : the front depicts an upper-class way crowd watching the races at Ascot in their elegant clothes while the back shows a miner's wife surrounded with her children in their cramped living quarters. "Mr. Brandt shows himself not only to be an artist but an anthropologist. He seems to have wandered about England with the detached curiosity of a man investigating the customs of some remote and unfamiliar tribe" (Raymond Mortimer, introduction).
