Description
picturing Palestine and surroundings, c. 26,5 x 20 cm, mounted on 190 boards, 29,5 x 24 cm (some boards with photogr. pasted recto verso, boards a bit dusty, some photogr. faded).
Photos kept in a filing box in openworked wood with an incorporated sliding magnifying glass. The viewing system with magnifying glass is called a graphoscope : a 19th-century device used in parlors in order to enhance the viewing of photographs and text. A photo/card holder was usually also included although our copy with a larger photo holder is rather rare. In gilt lettering on the front "Pa[l]es[t]i[n]e 189[2]". The box shows four compartments for the accompanying photos. Among the photographers : L. Fiorillo, a commercial photographer with a studio in Place Mehemet Ali, Alexandria in the 1870s. He photographed the effects of the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 and published an album of views. Zangaki (the Zangaki Brothers ?), a commercial photographer active in Egypt in the 1880s and 1890s. Most images of F. Bonfils (1831 - 1885), a French photographer and writer who was active in the Middle East. Photos of several cities : Alexandria, Caïro, Port-Said, Mount Carmel, Nazareth, Cana, see of Galilee, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Jordan River, Dead sea, Bethlehem, etc. Portrayed people : aristocratic Arabs, Jewish Arabs, shepherds, Bedouins, musicians, Turkish officers, derwishes,... Images of several monuments such as mosques, the palace of the sultan, a market, interiors and exteriors of churches, ruins, several city gates, an old arab house, tombs, Via Dolorosa, etc. *** See also 293.
