Description
Kept in a half simili leather box with gilt label on spine. Generally in good/acceptable condition (some letters dampstained or wrinkled, minor traces of use). Contains over 60 letters by the Comtesse, as well as over 75 drafts of answers/letters by her steward, all in French - with some additional loose notes. Marie Louise de Rohan (1720-1803), comtesse de Marsan, was the governess of Louis XVI of France and his siblings. As sister of the Prince of Soubise she acquired various large properties in Flanders and Hainaut (Ninove, Flobecq, etc.), where she was known as the "Dame de Grandmont". Ignace van den Broucke was from 1771 onwards steward of the household of the Prince de Ligne, and was asked to combine this with the care of Marsan's Flemish interests. He was mayor of Geraardsbergen (Grammont), but lived in Ghent as a member of the States of Flanders. This unpublished correspondence is significant for its (local) historical importance.
