Description
3 pp. + "Hymn to Death", ms. (autogr. ?) poem, 1 1/2 pp., on 2 ff., 12mo. Good condition. C.A. Vecchi (1814-1869) was an Italian historian and patriot, a personal friend of Giuseppe Garibaldi. L. Ellis sends him "the translation of some of the verses dictated to you by General Garibaldi (...) Will you be so kind as to send them to the General & if he approves of them request him to write so to the poetess (...) The honour will give her genius a new impetus & will make her give greater perfection to the versification of your hymn to Death (...) I hope to be able to have the little book ready for Christmas". With 2 poems : "Hymn to Death", inc. "All hail consoling Angel ! Thou art still...", exc. "Come ! take it back & give instead - a Grave ! -" and "Translation (...)", inc. "'Tis not among festoons that pompously fall...", exc. "The glorious cheating thou should'st fulfil". Lucy and Mary Elllis published in 1862 a translation of Vecchi's "Garibaldi e Caprera", with preface by Elisabeth Gaskell.
