Inside very good copy. Later ed. of this marvellous selection of views of Rome and vicinity in a magnificent cont. colouring on large paper by James Mérigot (French, active 1772–1814), a landscape artist and master drawing teacher in Paris in 1772. He established himself in London after 1791 and there was a drawing master and publisher of aquatint etchings that appeared in numerous British publications. Originally this work was published in 2 parts (1797 and 1799 respectively, with uncoloured pls and on large paper), the 1st part being published by R. Edwards, Bond Street, and the 2nd having no publisher's name on the t.-p., only "sold by". Here with the added engr. t.-p. with "J. Hearne's 218 Tottenham Court Road" imprint and 62 aquatints. All the plates have J. Mérigot as publisher, many also have R. Edwards in conjunction with him. "Le front. gr. de la première partie porte les seuls mots "Ruins of Rome" (in this copy: "Ruines de Rome")" (Graesse).
