Description
Utrecht, 2nd half 15th c. Middle Dutch manuscript on vellum, c. 14,5 x 10,3 cm, 18th-c. goldtooled mottled calf over wood (expertly repaired, clasps and catches gone), edges bevelled inside, covers with elaborate gilt ornamental border with corner pcs and large central ornament, richly gilt spine on 5 raised bands, a.e.g. (soiled), 171 ff. (mod. pencil numbering up to p. 111; 1 blank f. between calendar and text, other blanks cut out), ruled in brown ink, writing area c. 8,8 x 6,9 cm (cut short at top occ. shaving marg. decoration, blank top margin of 2nd half sl. stained). In very good condition. A very attractive well-executed and well-preserved Middle Ducth Book of Hours, superb in its simplicity.  Contents: Calendar (ff. 1-12v) with Utrecht saints (Ponciaen, Agnete, Pancras, Servaes, Bonifaes, Odulphus, Lebuin), dated at the end in another hand “an° MCCCCLX | S.P.”, blank f. 13, "Ghetiden van onser vrouwe" (ff. 14r-51v), "Vander ewiger wysheit" (ff. 52r-73v), "Ghetiden vanden heilighen gheeste" (ff. 74r-91v), "Die lange ghetide" (ff. 92r-114v), "Die vij psalmen" (ff. 115r-124r: Penitential Psalms), "Die letanye" etc. (124r-134v), "Die vigilie" (ff. 135r-171v) Decoration: superbly decorated and rubricated throughout; numerous small 1-line initials in red or blue; 28 larger initials with marg. flowery twigs; 5 large gilt initials at the beginning of text divisions, on a blue & red background; on f. 27r a large gilt 9-line blue initial ‘h’ with a peacock inside on a gilt background, and with marg. decoration of blue, green and ochre floral motifs. Pencil note on front flyleaf “6 Xbre 1872 £5. | flamand, reliure à conserver | remettre les fermoirs | de l’époque” (binder’s instructions).
