folio, mod. mottled calf (sl. rubbed), spine on 5 raised bands, marbl. endpapers, 319 (of 345) ff. (lacking Aa1-4, Bb1, 3B1, 6, 3F2, 5, 3I1, 3-4, 6, 3K1-4, 6, 3M1, 6, 3N1-6; missing text replaced in mod. handwriting; f. Bb6 bound as verso/recto; dampstained and soiled, many ff. marginally strengthened, some mounted, some tears rep. with sellotape, esp. H1). Still a good copy. Rare and only incunable ed. of the Dutch trsl. of the voluminous "Life of Christ" by the Carthusian spiritual writer Ludolf of Saxony (1300-1378). It is not a biography, but a meditation on the life of Christ, with doctrinal, spiritual, and moral instructions, as well as prayers and extensive patristic extensions. Ill. with 220 woodcuts in vivid old handcolouring (25 full-page, 65 half-page, 130 smaller, incl. repeats; nude figures "covered" with grey). On f. a1r a 21-line hand-coloured woodcut initial. Rubricated in red and blue. Gothic type in 2 cols of 42 ll.
