sm. folio, mod. half leather, [54 (of 56)] ff. (lacking final ff. o3-4; dampstained, margins def. with occ. loss of text, old repairs of edges with paper strips, some ff. mounted). In all a good copy. Unique copy of the unrecorded Dutch translation/adaptation of the French chivalric novel on Galien. Inc.: “Hier beghint die seer schoone wonderlijke historie van den aldervromsten campioen Galyen rethore. Met oock die aldermeeste bloetstortinghe der kerstenen ende der heydenen geschiet op den ronchevale doer die verraderie vanden alder valschten verrader gouweloen”. “Galien (le) Restoré” (c. 1300), a work in the King Cycle, narrates the tribulations of Galien, Olivier’s son by Jacqueline, daughter of Emperor Hugh of Constantinople. It combines several chansons de geste with a rhymed version of the “Chanson de Roland”. Galien arrives at Roncevaux and witnesses the death of his father and of Roland. Victorious, he conquers the castle of Monfusain. He is also crowned Emperor of Constantinople. The work was 1st printed in 1500 by A. Vérard in Paris (GW 12569). Title with woodcut ill. and borders. On verso of title large woodcut imperial arms of Charles V within woodcut border. 36 large woodcuts (incl. repeats), some with 2 scenes, within woodcut borders. 35 of these woodcuts similar to, but not identical with, woodcuts in the chronicles and chivalric texts published by W. Vorsterman. 1 woodcut (f. a2r) was used earlier by the Brussels publisher Thomas van der Noot (NAT, Van der Noot X. nr. 20). Gothic type in 2 cols.
