Original French text of the ‘Verantwoordinge’. “It sought systematically to undermine the accusations raised against Orange by the summons Alva had issued against him. Its main point was to refute any allegation of ambition on Orange’s behalf to usurp the authority of Philip II.” (Van Gelderen, Political thought in the Dutch Revolt, p. 120). The text is sometimes attributed to Hubert Languet (1518-1581).
