Adjudication : Invendu
Description
8vo, old boards, flat spine with ink titled vellum labels, 575-[1] pp. (some minor spotting, unobtrusive dampstain in bottom margin of last quires). Very good copy. 1st ed. of Erasmus’ 2nd reply to Luther’s "De servo arbitrio" (1525). Erasmus had already replied in 1526, but was pressed to publish a more extensive treatise on the debate fired by Luther. Woodcut mark on title and at the end. In italics. A few old ms. notes (i.a. p. 515, cropped). Old names and notes on title, i.a. "Joh: Val: Maier", not Luther’s adversary Johann Maier von Eck (Eckius, 1486-1543) but most probably "Johann Valentin Maier" (1595-1668), Lutheran physician at the Brandenburg court.
