Description
4to, 18th-c. polished calf, richly gilt spine, red edges, red silk marker, [8] ff. (title sl. soiled). Exc. copy. Only ed. of a study of celibacy (in casu of St Paul), by the Augustinian K. Leib (1471-1553), a defender of monastic vows. It is written in the form of a letter (from his convent in Rebdorf, 4 Dec. 1544) to the Catholic apologetic controversialist Johannes Cochlaeus (1479-1552). Cochlaeus published the letter with an additional dedication to the bishop of Speyer (5 Dec. 1544). The text contains some references to Erasmus' views. Large woodcut ill. on title. In italics.
