Description
folio, rebound in a mod. richly decorated blindstamped calf (rubbed, waterstains on lower edge), gilt spine on 5 raised bands, red gilt title label, [24]-495-[21] pp. (waterstains, stains due to deletions).  Plantin's French ed. of a monument in the history of the Low Countries : the eloquent description of its 16th-c. towns by the Italian resident author Guicciardini (1521-1589). With an allegorical front. (remargined upper margin), title, border with coat-of-arms of the 17 Provinces with in the centre verse of Sallust, allegorical border of arts & sciences with in the middle a verse of Virgil, and 77 pl. (of 78 : lacking cityplan of Saint-Omer) of maps, city plans & views of Flanders (Louvain, Antwerp, Lier, Malines, Ghent, Bruges, Tournai...), the Netherlands (Roermond, Zutphen, Arnhem, Gelder, Leeuwarden, Franecker, Schoonhoven, Middelburg ...), Northern France (Lille, Douai, Artois, Arras, Cambray), Luxemburg and Aachen.
