Description
8vo, cont. gilt calf (rubbed), covers with gilt and blindruled borders and gilt oval central ornament, gilt spine on 5 raised bands (head & tail def.), 761-[7] pp. (paper age-toned, some spotting and soiling, worming 1st quires touching some letters and in blank bottom margin). Good copy. Original ed. of “one of the monuments of sixteenth-century scholarship. In a life much vexed by the violence of governments, he [i.e. Lipsius] found much, as his notes declare, in common with Tacitus’ ironic and cynical records of first-century Rome” (PMM 93). Woodcut mark on title " J. Martinon, aduocat au Parlement du Dauphiné" with an interesting note on his reading “commencé en feurier la lecture pour le [?]nuyer le 16 octobre 1621”.
