Description
sm. 8vo (14 x 10 cm), 19th-c. blindtooled calf (rubbed), spine on 4 double bands (rubbed on joints & head, worn at hinges), 304 pp. (t.-p. loose, sm. holes due to oxidation, roughly rep. with tape, 1 or 2 ff. shaved at head). Good copy. Unrecorded ed. by W. Vorsterman at Antwerp, of a very popular devotional work, presenting, explaining and illustrating the office of the mass and sacraments for a general audience. 1st published at Gouda in 1506, Vander Goude's book went through several editions by various Antwerp publishers. Vorsterman printed and published 4 nearly identical eds. with the present title, each known only from a single surviving copy (in one case a severely defective copy !). The colophon of one (at the BL) is dated 1538, another at the Regional Archives in Gouda has been dated c. 1529, and a 3rd (lacking the title and 7 lvs) at the Royal Library in The Hague has been dated c. 1535.  With title and calendar (1st quires) printed in red & black, hand col. woodcuts : Vorsterman's full-page device on the last page, 71 ills (c. 5 x 7,5 cm) : 2 of the office of the mass on t.-p. and verso, 33 illustrating the articles of the mass, 33 illustrating Christ's life, passion and resurection and 3 sl. smaller ones depicting Christ's life (incl. Madonna with Child & resurection), large interlaced gothic initial in red on t.-p., 2 decorated initials & 1 repeat. Binder's stamp (Benjamin ?) Broadbere in Salisbury, England. Ex-dono to Henry Deane student at St. John's College Oxford, 1867, from "T.G.S.".
