4to, cont. mottled sheep (skilfully repaired, sl. tanned and rubbed at joints), covers with double gilt ruled border, gilt spine on 5 raised bands  (joints sl. split.), sp. edges, [60]-420 (= 486) pp. (lacking final f. with errata; paper age-toned). Good copy. Rare 1st ed. of the French trsl. of the “Principia philosophiae” (Amsterdam 1644) of R. Descartes (1596-1650) by Claude Picot, a bon vivant known as “the Atheist Priest” (d. 1668). The “Principles of philosophy” was the only complete version of Descartes’ natural philosophy published in his lifetime and the first published work in which he presents and defends his vortex theory, the core of his heliocentric model of the universe.
