8vo, mod. boards, [8]-191-[1] pp. (cut short sl. shaving printed marginalia of A3, paper age-toned, some spotting, sm. tears in margin of quire X). Good copy.   1st ed. of a treatise on the dissolution of marriage on account of sexual dysfunction (‘impotence’). The legal procedure, called “épreuve du congres” (from the Latin ‘congressus = intercourse’), was humiliating: the husband had to prove in public (before a jury consisting of lawyers, judges and witnesses) that he was able to fulfill the duties imposed by marriage.
