Description
folio, mod. green morocco (sl. rubbed), covers with triple gilt border, richly gilt spine on 5 raised bands, gilt sides, gilt interior ornamental border, a.e.g., marbl. endpapers, silk marker, [14]-402-[2] pp. (lacking final quire Mm of 6 ff. (= index ?, text seems to be compl.; occ. very minor spotting). Exc. copy. Latin trsl. by H. Parry (1561-1616) of “Summe of the conference betwene John Rainoldes and John Hart” (London 1584). The present ed. is a re-issue of John Barnes’ 1610 Oxford ed. “The practice of holding private conferences with Catholic priests in prison and of publishing them in support of the Protestant cause had already been followed by William Fulke ... Subsequently, John Reynolds [1549-1607] arranged a similar conference, with better success, with the seminary priest John Hart (who was later received into the Society of Jesus). His report of it, published with Hart’s approval, went into several editions, and was also translated into Latin – though it was not till 1610 that the translation was eventually published by order of Archbishop Bancroft” (Milward p. 60). Title within elaborate woodcut border. Printed within ruled borders. Old ownership entry at top of title (partly erased) with mention "prohibitus".
