lge 4to, cont. vellum, flat spine, [16]-124-[4] pp. (paper age-toned, dampstaining throughout). Good copy. The 1st book illustrated by P.P. Rubens. Collection of essays on Roman Antiquity by the painter’s brother Philippus (1574-1611), together with a number of poems on Justus Lipsius. 4 full-page folding engravings, and 1 half-page engraving, by C. Galle after P.P. Rubens (designed while still in Italy). They show a Roman statue dressed in toga, Circus games, a statue in a tunic, the head of a Roman priest, and a Roman helmet. Engr. mark on title, a woodcut mark at the end. Old ownership entries on title and front flyleaf.
