Description
very large folio, paper c. 56 x 40 cm, mod. overl. pigskin, flat spine, [8]-189-[13] pp. (some very minor soiling, a few tiny holes in blank margins, some pls cut short, a few touching the border of the pls, some tears in blank margin, margins of some pls (esp. folding ones) strenghtened). Nice large paper copy. Magnificent publication on the Antwerp Entry of the Spanish Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in 1635. The production was delayed on account of financial problems, the untimely death of a major collaborator (Rubens, May 1640), and almost halted by the death of Ferdinand himself (November 1641). The ed. has a number of variants, described by Arents. The present copy is complete but for the half-title, and includes the rare equestrian portrait of Ferdinand (printed for 200 de luxe copies only). Copy with 40 full-page (or double-page) engravings by Th. van Tulden after Rubens, depicting the arches and stages built and the paintings adorning them, a nice view of the Antwerp cathedral and a large bird's-eye view of the city of Antwerp (39 plates, two with 3 engravings each, + the additional equestrian portrait). The t.-p. has the name of the engraver "Iac. Neeffs" and the original imprint (Arents a); the colophon bears the exact date 1642 (and not the intended date "1641"). 46 small engravings in text (coins and medals). 19th-c. presentation inscription pasted on front endpaper: “Mr. P.J. Huybrechts à son ami Henry Leys” (i.e. the Romantic painter, 1815-1869).
