large folio, old dark calf (sl. rubbed), covers with blind and gilt ruled borders, richly gilt spine on 6 raised bands (front joint starting to split), gilt sides, yellow edges, inside dentelles, marbl. endpapers, [8]-xxviii-158-[4] pp. (esp. text-pages sl. age-toned and spotted). Good large paper copy. Dutch ed., publ. simultaneously with the original French ("Le temple des Muses"), of a sumptuous publication on classical mythology by La Barre de Beaumarchais (1698-after 1750). The work, based on Michel de Marolles’ "Le temple des Muses" (1655), explains a number of classical myths and stories, mainly from Ovid. It is esp. valued for the beautiful engravings by B. Picart (1673-1733), a French engraver active in the Netherlands : front., title vignette, headpc. and 60 full-page pl., printed within exquisite ornamental borders. Title in red and black. Masonic (?) armorial bookpl. with device "Aude, Vide, Tace".
