nicht nach dem alten Druck der Französischen Edition, darinnen nur vier Bücher; sondern durch alle zwantzig Bücher gantz aufs neu in die Hochteutsche Sprach übersetzet [...] und in zweyen Theilen, heraus gegeben durch Christian Peganium, sonst Rautner genannt.
Nurnberg, [Johann Ziegers seel. Wittwe], 1713]. Small in-4° : [6]-1048-[48] pp.; 20 h.-t. (frontispiece portrait lacking, title-page and some plates cut too short with loss of the last line of the imprint and of plate numbers, some leaves brownished, sporadic stains, some little lacks of paper or splits in the margins without loss of text, pp. 604-611 canceled with some red pencil lines but still readable). Contemporary binding : overlapping parchment, ms. reference numbers on the spine, red edges (parchment slightly soiled, old handwritings on the edges). Second German edition (1st german ed. small in-8°, 1680), enlarged with "Anmerckungen" and additions by the editor and translator, "Christian Peganium, sonst Rautner genannt", pseudonym for Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (1639-1689), a German Hebraist and cabalist. The illustration includes 20 curious plates representing scenes related to the themes of each of the twenty books, and figures in the text. Napolitan disciple of Cardan and Arnauld de Villeneuve, Della Porta (1535-1615) was the founder of a scientific society called "Academia dei Segreti", compelled to disband when its members were suspected of dealing with occultism. Della Porta also perfected the camera obscura and invented many experiences of optic which influenced the discovery of the telescope. His "Magia naturalis" (1st ed. in 4 books : 1558) was revised and considerably expanded throughout his lifetime, increasing to twenty books (1589). This popular book, often edited and translated into several languages, contains observations upon geology, optics, medicine, poisons, cooking, metallurgy, magnetism, cosmetics, perfumes, gunpowder, invisible writing, etc.
