Elle est illustrée d'un portrait de l'auteur et de quarante-deux planches hors texte, dont dix-neuf figures coloriées d'histoire naturelle. « Commanded by Louis Isidore Duperrey, this voyage of 1822-25 was largely scientific in purpose, calling at Brazil and the Falkland Islands, and then rounding Cape Horn and sailing up the coast, visiting Concepción, Callao, and Payta. [...] Lesson was the naturalist of this expedition, and his account of the voyage supplies details which Duperrey failed to include in his own account. » (Hill).
