Description
(front cover loose), 90 pl. stuck by corners on 21 ff. (traces of glue in corners and on verso, 2 pl. lacking right bottom blank corner, 1 pl. with tear in upper right corner). Otherwise pl. in good condition. Cfr. ill. Rare made-up album containing 90 etchings on diff. papers stuck on browning paper, various sizes by norblin (sometimes followed by ‘W. varsovie’), mostly signed (or signed in reverse) and some dated. some etchings with signature ‘rembrandt f.’ most probably also by norblin. Norblin, a French-born painter and engraver, resided from 1774 to 1804 in the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, where he obtained citizenship. He is considered one of the most important painters of the Polish enlightenment and achieved great succes given many commissions from some of the most notable Polish families. He is known for its meticulous work and miniature engr. portraits representing people of all social classes. This particular album contains a large part of his 93 etchings (Hillemacher) i.a. his sought after “Self-portrait”, “Resurrection of Lazarus”, “Raising of Lazarus”, etc. We note that in this album 27 etchings are not signed which are most probably of the hand of Norblin. According to Monod Norblin had an engr. oeuvre of nearly 100 etchings, ‘... ordinairement traitées dans la manière de Rembrandt... Il a fait des belles copies de Rembrandt...’. Two other engr. signed M. Ronski showing clearly a diff. style: (1) “Juif d’Amsterdam”, n. 10 indicated in the right bottom corner, (2) “1802”. Ref.
