Description
The etcher and printmaker J. van Vliet (c. 1600/1610-1668) was a collaborator of Rembrandt in Leiden, 1628-1637. He published many engravings after designs of Rembrandt. The present collection consists of 6 engravings, from “The Beggars suite” of 1632, titled “By tgeeue bestaet Ons Leeue”: title showing 2 cripples receiving alms (Hollstein 73), Beggar with 2 crutches (76), Seated beggar (77), Beggar with a wooden leg (74), The Hurdy-gurdy player (81), The Pedlar (79). The 2nd plate in the present set does not belong to the suite, but shows a “Figure seen from the back” (Hollstein 61). Pencil acquisition note “vente Morel Mars 1884”.
