novembre 1890. Collection of 20 photographs, albumen print process, 1890, 13,3 x 9,5 cm (3 pc) & 21 x 27,7 cm (17 pc), stuck on cardboard, kept in a red cloth publisher’s cloth map (soiled, ties, inside bit stained and worn). Pictures in perfect condition. Very rare collection of pictures made by the Swedish photographer G. Berggren (1835-1920), showing not only views of istambul, smyrne and the Bosphorus, but also scenery of dayly life (eventualy mimicked in studio) i.a. 2 men smoking a water pipe while playing domino, a fisherman, women in a cemetary, firefighters etc. Ref. engin cisgen - Photography in Ottoman empire, Istambul, Haset Kitabevi, 1987: G. Berggren left Sweden in 1855, learned photography in Berlin, and settled in Constantinople in 1866, opening a studio in the early 1870s. He combined studio work (portraits of people event. posing in Turkish attire) with fieldwork making photographs of street scenes and of the architecture of constantinople, landscapes, ruins, and major religious sites of the Bosporus region. thanks to his laborious technique and his aesthetic sense, he became one of the most prominent photographers of the Ottoman empire.
