Description
[= Vlakke aard-kloot, gemeenlyk genaamd de Geheele Waereld (...).] Amsterdam, I. Covens & C. Mortier, s.d., (c. 1720), 52,5 x 60,7 cm, b/w. Very good sharp printed copy. Cfr. ill. very rare decorative double hemisphere map of the world, surrounded by 8 additional hemispheric projections of the world. One of the earliest maps to abandon the baroque style of the 17th c. for a more scientific appearance. Shows California as an Island, incompl. coastlines for Australia and new Zealand, continuous land from asia to the northwest coast of america and many other cont. geographical misconceptions. allard’s innovative style was copied by a number of other mapmakers, including schenk, Zürner, Homann, seutter and covens & Mortier. this historically significant world map was probably printed as a separate map since there in no text on verso and since it does not show any spurs of a guard on the central fold. Ref. shirley 578.
