cont. sheep (rubbed, front joint starting to split, head and tail def.), richly gilt spine on 5 raised bands with gilt label, red edges, marbled endpapers, xvj-[12]-643-[1] pp. (title soiled, some minor staining). Good copy. “J. cassini (1677-1756), who succeeded his father as head of the Paris Observatory, was a cartesian and a vigorous opponent of newtonianism. He was involved in both geodetic and astronomical studies (…). He published numerous memoirs in the “Histoire de l’Académie” as well as two books, a manual entitled Éléments d’Astronomie, and a collection of astronomical tables. His main interests lay in the study of the planets and their satellites, particularly the inclination of the orbits of the satellites and the structure of saturn’s ring, and in the observation and the theory of comets, and the tides.” (Lake).
