Description
on the back of the 2 last pp.). 19th Century binding : glazed calf, boards encircled by three gilt fillets, gilt decorated ribbed spine, gilt roll-stamps on the edges, blind roll-stamps on the turn ins, marbled paper boards, red sprinkled edges (rubbed on the edges, slightly trimmed, 1 corner dulled, flyleaves renewed). First Plantinian edition (1,ed. : Augsburg 1531) illustrated with 112 woodcuts by Arnold Nicolai and Gerard Janssen van Kampen and given with commentaries by Sebastian Stockhammer in book I. The book II being not illustrated or commented. The illustrations are copied from an Alciato edition by Jean de Tournes (1, ed. : 1547) who was also the first usingStockhammer's comments in 1556 and 1561. As Voet says, "it may be assumed that Plantin for his 1565-publication pirated en edition of Jean de Tournes printed in 1563 or 1564, although copies of such a de Tournes-edition are not known".
