blank leaf lacking in our copy, verso of S8 blank, title-page doubled with tears repaired, foxing, some lvs +/- browned, dampstains - some large-, marginal tears, 2 repaired, stains). Emblazoned binding by Giulio Giannini : brown-red morocco, decorated boards with blind and gilt fillets, angular fleurons, gilt arms within acentral losange on upper board, gilt decorated ribbed spine, marbled paper pastedowns and flyleaves, gauffered gilt edges (upper board partly faded, flyleaves renewed). Under case. First edition of the Divine Comedy given with the extended commentaries by the Italian poet and scholar Alessandro Vellutello (born in Lucca in c. 1473). Illustrated with 87 (of which 3 full-pages) very nice woodcuts in texto, attributed to Giovanni Britto (c. 1500/ before 1530- after 1550), the German engraver working with Francesco Marcolini. Those engravings, for the first time closely related to the commentaries of Vellutello in opposite to the other sixteenth-century editions, were the most significant Renaissance illustrations of the Commedia after those of Boticelli and had a major influence posteriorly. Pieno marocchino marrone- rosso stemmato moderno (incompleto del ultimo foglio bianco, frontespizio foderato, qualche pp. +/- brunite, macchie d'acqua, qualche larghe). fl Première édition donnée avec les commentaires du poète Alessandro Vellutello. Illustré de 87 (dont 3 pleines pp.) jolies gravures sur bois, pour la première fois étroitement en lien avec les gloses de Velutello. Plein maroquin brun-rouge moderne armorié (dernier f. blanc manquant, titre doublé avec restaurations de déch., qqs pp. +/- brunies, mouill.dont qqs-unes étendues).
