Description
light dampstains in the margins, folds in the last pp. otherwise very fresh copy). Contemporary binding : flexible vellum with visible sewing and small flaps, flat spine (stains, ties lacking). Important work (1, ed. : 1587) on the history of the war between the Turkish and Persians, from 1578 to 1587. The war broke out in 1576 after the death of Shah Tahmasp (1514- 1576) when Sultan Murad III (1546-1595) took advantage of it and of the disorders arising to invade Persia. The conflitct lasted for 12 years until Shah Abbas (1571-1629) established himself on the throne of Persia in 1590 and made peace with Turkey. This 1594 edition is based on the second enlarged edition of 1588 and is illustrated with a nice folding map and contains two interesting indexes : one of the Turkish and Persian names with their Italian translations and explanations and one of the names with their "modern" Italian appellations. Ending on a letter to Mario Corrado on Tauris (i.e. Tabriz, capital city of Azerbaijan). Minadoi (1545-1618) studied medicine at the Univerisity of Padua and he was for seven years at the service of the Venetian Embassy in Constantinople and in Syria. During his stay he collected, as an eye-witness, material for this account. At his return in Italy, he became physician to the Duke of Mantua and was appointed professor of medicine at Padua. Neat typography with printer's mark on title-page. Work often edited and translated. # Adams M-1456; # Atabey 817; # USTC 842794; # not in Machiels nor in Soltész.
