Intéressante correspondance à son ami et compatriote cubain, sur sa vie privée, son travail et ses expositions, et sur la Révolution cubaine, avec une lettre ornée d'un dessin.
L'écrivain et artiste Sergio Albio GONZALES (né à Cuba en 1931) habite Stockholm. Les lettres de Lam sont écrites de Stockholm, Paris, Albissola Mare en Italie, Milan, Zürich... Nous ne pouvons donner ici qu'un aperçu de cette correspondance.
C'est en juin 1955 que Wifredo Lam a rencontré l'artiste suédoise Lou Laurin, à Paris, à la Galerie du Dragon, lors d'une exposition consacrée aux artistes latino-américains. Au début de cette correspondance, Lam demande à son ami, qui est à Stockholm, de l'aider dans sa relation avec Lou, avec qui il a des soucis ; il est désespéré ; elle ne veut pas qu'il la rejoigne à Stockholm ; Sergio pourrait la voir et tâcher de savoir ce qui se passe : «Estoy en dificultades con Lou. [...] Estoy desesperado. [...] ella no quiere que yo vaya a STK [...] Yo te pido si tu puedes verla [...] con mucha prudencia [...] interogarla sobre esto para ver que pase y luego escriberme». Wifredo et Lou se marient finalement à New-York en 1960 et ont leur premier enfant en mai 1961, nommé Eskil-Soren-Obini Lam, petit Cubain Suédois qui ne sait pas qu'il est citoyen de F. Castro, en ces temps difficiles ; la fille de Gonzales naît quelque temps plus tard : «Yo lo encuentro muy simpatico este pequeno sueco cubano, no sabe el que es cuidadano de F. Castro [...] Los momentos mas dificil pasan ahora. Dentro de poco una sonriza de tu hija sera como una aurora en tu espirito - en tu ser»...
Le thème de la Révolution cubaine est récurrent dans les lettres. Lam, bien qu'il ait rompu avec le communisme, suivant son ami Aimé Césaire dans la condamnation du stalinisme, soutient encore Fidel CASTRO, demandant à Gonzales ce qu'il pense de Cuba, les États-Unis, Castro, la révolution, les amis, les ennemis, etc., et rappelle ses idées en faveur de la justice et de la cause de la Révolution dans leur pays : «Dime que tu pienses sobre este asunto de nuestro pais : USA, Castro, Revolucion - amigos - enemigos, etc. [...] tu sabes bien mis ideales [...] por la justicia y la causa de la Revolucion de nuestro pais»... Il partage avec son ami sa critique du gouvernement américain, redoutant qu'il ne prépare une invasion de Cuba avec des mercenaires et des criminels ; il espère que Castro pourra anéantir ceux qui cherchent à faire couler le sang du peuple de Cuba ; personne à Cuba ne veut la guerre ; mais la République de Cuba dérange les Américains, ils sont hystériques jusqu'à en être ridicules : «Parece que los Americanos preparan un grand invasion - con mercenarios de todas las racallas especialmente legionarios tipo Para [...] criminales, ladrones, violadores sin chape esto es lo que me dicen los amigos mios en Paris [...] espero que Castro tenga la buena suerte de aniquilar los que quieren tal cosas ensangrentar el pueblo de Cuba, que los dejen en paz. Nadie quiere guerra, es idiota. Pero el gob. de los americanos del norte - no se conforma, les duele la R. cubana. son histericos hasta el ridículo»...
Il informe également son ami de son travail, de ses expositions à Cuba, avec Krugier à Genève, à la Kunsthalle de Bâle ou à Munich, et des prix qu'il a remportés, comme le prix international Guggenheim, en 1964. Etc. — Une lettre est ornée d'un grand dessin au stylo bleu dans la marge. Sur deux enveloppes et une carte postale, Lam s'est amusé à dessiner des timbres de fantaisie à l'effigie de Fidel Castro («Viva Castro») et «St Patricio Lumumba Martir». Une lettre et une carte de Lou Laurin Lam complètent cet ensemble.
