Description
Souscription pour l'achat d'Olympia de Manet, afin de l'offrir au musée du Louvre. [C'est Monet qui prit l'initiative, en 1889, de lancer une souscription pour racheter Olympia à la veuve de Manet, afin de l'offrir au Louvre. En mars 1890, il peut acheter le tableau à Suzanne Manet pour 19 415 francs, et le tableau entre alors au musée du Luxembourg, malgré les réticences de l'administration ; il est aujourd'hui au Musée d'Orsay. La richissime Winnaretta Singer, alors princesse de Scey-Montbéliard (1865-1943), et future princesse de POLIGNAC, sera la principale donatrice, avec 2 000 francs.]

•16 février. «Devant prendre possession de l'Olympia, et remettre ces jours ci le montant des souscriptions à Madame Manet je viens vous prier de bien vouloir me faire parvenir, le plus tôt possible, le montant de votre souscription (2000 F) que vous m'avez chargé d'inscrire sous votre nom»...

•20 février. Il accuse réception et remercie de l'envoi de «Deux-mille francs pour votre souscription à l'achat de l'Olympia de Manet. Je n'ose espérer encore un succès de l'entreprise (car il faut compter avec la haine et l'imbécilité courante) mais quoi qu'il arrive le tableau nous restera acquit pour être remis à l'état en temps opportun, si l'administration actuelle commet la bêtise de le refuser»...

"Claude Monet", Giverny February 16 and 20, 1890, [to Winnaretta SINGER, Princess of SCEY-MONTBÉLIARD] ; 1 1/2 pages in-8 each in purple ink (binder holes). — Subscription for the purchase of Manet's Olympia, in order to offer it to the Louvre Museum. [It was Monet who took the initiative in 1889 to launch a subscription to buy Olympia from Manet's widow, in order to offer it to the Louvre. In March 1890, he was able to buy the painting from Suzanne Manet for 19,415 francs, and the painting entered the Musée du Luxembourg, despite the reluctance of the administration ; it is now in the Musée d'Orsay. The wealthy Winnaretta Singer, then Princess of Scey-Montbéliard (1865-1943), and future Princess of POLIGNAC, was the principal donor, with 2,000 francs]. 16 February. "Having to take possession of Olympia, and to hand over these days the amount of the subscriptions to Madame Manet, I have come to ask you to send me, as soon as possible, the amount of your subscription (2000 F) which you have asked me to inscribe under your name"... February 20th. He acknowledges receipt and thanks for sending "Two thousand francs for your subscription to the purchase of Manet's Olympia. I do not dare to hope for the success of the enterprise (for we must reckon with hatred and common imbecility), but whatever happens, the painting will remain ours to keep, to be returned to the state in due course, if the present administration commits the stupidity of refusing it"...
