Wing S-696. Paolo Sarpi was an influential Venetian scholar and church reformer. After Pope Paul V excommunicated Venice and its possessions, Sarpi's strong arguments against the Papal position made him the target of a Papal sponsored assassination (1607). Sarpi's later work, Istoria del Concilio Tridentino (History of the Council of Trent), was an important critical work of the Catholic Church's reformation, especially the role of the curia. His history was widely read by Protestants, including John Milton, who called Sarpi "the great unmasker" (Peter Burke, The great unmasker: Paolo Sarpi, 1551-1613, in History Today, 15, 1965, p. 430).
