Lisiansky was the deputy commander on this first Russian circumnavigation under Krusenstern. While Krusenstern was in Kamchatka, Lisiansky took his ship the Neva to Sitka where he played an important part in the reoccupation of the settlement which had been savagely attacked by the Kolosh Indians. On the way to China, the Neva hit a reef which led to the discovery of the Hawaiian islands now bearing Lisiansky's name.
