PACIFISTES. 5 lettres de pacifistes anglosaxons adressées à Charles Lemonnier (1806-1891), militant pacifiste et saint-simonien, président de la Ligue Internationale de la Paix et de la Liberté. - Lewis APPLETON, pacifiste anglais, fondateur (avec Hodgson Pratt) de l'International Arbitration and peace association. Lettre autographe signée et lettre signée à Charles Lemonnier. 6 pp. ½ in-4, en-tête de l'International Arbitration and Peace Association. Londres, janvier - mai 1881. En anglais. Dans une première longue lettre (5 pp. ½ in-4), il évoque les activités de l'IAPA et leurs divergences de vues. « Personally, I am with you in the aspiration for this good end, but in struggling for this fear the remedy will be worse than the disease […]. But whatever may be differences between us on this head, it is not on principle but of policy, and we can cordially reciprocate the generous view you have expressed in the letter addressed by your Committee to all the societies which took part in the Paris Conference in 1878 that you are profoundly convinced of the strength of concert and of union which efforts can bring to the cause of peace […]. Permit me now to write a few lines of the International Arbitration and Peace Association of which I have the honor to be secretary […]". Il évoque le premier meeting qui eut lieu le 13 août 1880 et le nombre d'adhésions qui s'est accru pour arriver à 1500 ; il lui propose de devenir l'un des vice-présidents. Une seconde lettre est consacrée à l'envoi des États-Unis d'Europe. - Stanley MATTHEWS (1824-1889), juge américain, il fut nommé à la Supreme Court par le président Hayes (1881). Lettre autographe signée à Charles Lemonnier. 2 pp. in-8, en-tête à son chiffre. Washington, 16 nov. 1881. Il accuse réception des différentes brochures que Lemonnier lui a fait parvenir et lui envoie les coordonnées de quelques personnes pouvant être intéressées par sa cause. « You will observe that what I say in reference to the subject of International arbitration, is incidental and not by way of a full and formal treatment of so fruitful a theme. But the sentiment I have expressed show that I sympathize perfectly with the efforts of yourself and your associates in educating the public opinion of the world in the doctrines of peace and good will […]». - Hodgson PRATT (Bath 1824-1907), pacifiste anglais, fondateur (avec Lewis Appleton) de l'International Arbitration and Peace Association (IAPA) en 1880.
