col.-[15]-[1 bl.]-xii-[2] pp.-engr. title-engr. dedication; 161 (of 163) plates (quires of text inverted, the correct collation is : [6]-XII-[2] pp., 170 col.-[15] pp.; foxing, some pp. and plates slightly browned, marginal tear at pl. XIV, some marginal stains). Contemporary binding : red morocco, boards encircled with 3 frames of gilt floral roll-stamps, two with floral angular fleurons, gilt decorated ribbed spine, gilt roll-stamps on the edges and turn ins, gilt edges (scratches, joints partly split, lacks at the upper turn in, spine slightly faded, small stains, corners dulled).
First edition of this nice collection of plates depicting ancient and modern Italian statues, mainly Roman, by the sculptor and engraver De Rossi (1659-1730). This work contains an engraved title and allegorical dedication to Clement XI and is composed of 161 (of 163) steel-engravings by a.o. Francesco Aquila, Nicolas Dorigny and François Handriot figuring the Borghese gladiator, The rape of the Sabin women, Urban VIII, Hercules Aventinus, Innocent X, Julius Caesar, David... Preceded by a descriptive text of the antiquarian Paolo Alessandro Maffei (1653-1716). Text decorated with two historiated head-pieces, two tail-pieces and with ornemental initial letters.
