[2]-3/47-[3] pp.; 119 plates (some spots, restored marginal tears in several pp., 8 plates with restored tears of which 2 with small losses, some pp. browned). Contemporary binding : calf, gilt decorated boards with several fillets, roll-stamps and a central medallion, gilt and black decorated ribbed spine, sprinkled edges (rubbed, brown round trace on upper cover, joints partly split, spine slightly loose).
First edition of this atlas of natural history based on the results of explorations in Northern Africa by Rüppell (1794-1884), a German naturalist, in collaboration with Cretzschmar, physician, both founding members of the Senckenberg Natural History Society. Contains 5 parts on mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates.
