In this course, it was Bernard's aim to "determine the elementary conditions of the phenomena of life", that is, "to return to the elementary condition of the vital phenomenon, a condition that is identical in all animals". In contrast to comparative physiology, general physiology "does not seek to grasp the differences that separate beings, but the common points that unite them and which constitute the essence of the vital phenomena" (DSB, II, p. 27).
