Petrie (1853-1942), father of modern egyptoloy and pioneer of systematic methodology in archeology, was the first to use seriation to establish the chronology of a site. His most famous discovery was the Merneptah Stele, account of the victory of Merneptah over the Libyans and their allies and of a separate campaign in Canaan. Petrie mentored and trained a new generation of egyptologists including Howard Carter with whom he didn't get on.
