Publisher's binding : bordeaux cloth, upper boards with gilt illustration and title, flat spines with gilt title, gilt top edges (joints of vol. I repaired, wears or stains, edges and corners dulled).

FIRST EDITION of this journey made by Budge (1857-1934) into Sudan. Profusely illustrated with vignettes, full-pages and plates, some folding, protected by tissue guards figuring the Pyramid of Murtek, plans (cataract of Semna and Kumma, Temple at Gebel Barkal, pyramids of El-Kurru...), Nile at Kassingar, Aswan in 1904, British cemetery on the Atbara in 1898, Mosque at Khartoum, altar with Meroitic inscriptions, etc. Budge made numerous trips to Egypt and Sudan to buy antiquities for the British Museum.
Provenance : Richard William Alan Onslow (1876-1945), 5th Earl of Onslow, British peer, diplomat and parliamentary (emblazoned ex-libris); New College, Oxford (id. + stamps, copy given by R.W.A. Onslow).
