Contemporary binding : battle-grey calf, boards encircled with a blind roll-stamp and a double gilt fillet with angular fleurons, gilt decorated ribbed spine, gilt roll-stamps on the edges, double gilt fillet on the turn ins, gilt edges (partly rubbed on the edges and joints, scratches, corners slightly dulled, stamp on upper flyleaf).

Travel made in the winter of 1873-1874 with friends by the English novelist Edwards (1831-1892) from Cairo to Saqqarah, Memphis, Denderah, Philae, Abu Simbel, Thebes, etc. This travel made her aware of the increasing threat towards the ancient monuments by tourism and modern development. In the purpose of their preservation she co-founded the Egypt Exploration Fund (now Egypt Exploration Society) with Reginald Stuart Poole. Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignettes, full-pages and a red printed plate figuring hieratic inscription. First published in 1877.
