Description
In-f° : [4]-102-[2] pp.; 48 pl. (title unbound, copy slightly yellowed, foxing, sometimes numerous, some stains, marginal dampstain, copy broken at end of quire "L").
Contemporary binding : threequarter calf, marbled paper boards encircled with a gilt roll-stamp, flat spine with gilt fillets, brown sprinkled edges (spine, joints and parts of the boards repaired, rubbed, edges very dulled, upper flyleaf lacking).

FIRST EDITION illustrated with 48 very nice HAND-COLOURED AQUATINTS figuring panoramical scenes of the Nile Valley, archaeological sites, monuments, inside views of the pyramids and costumes. Mayer (1755-1803) was one of the first and most important painters of the Ottoman Empire and close friend of Robert Ainslie (c. 1730-1812), ambassador to Turkey between 1776 and 1792.
