Description
In-f° (31,5 x 54 cm) : [3] ff.; 30 double-page plates mounted on guards (4 pl. with reduced lower margins, small restauration at lower corner of 1st title).
Modern binding : half blue shagreen with corners, blue marbled paper boards, ribbed spine with gilt fillets and roll-stamps, brown sprinkled edges (light white spots on the spine).

FIRST EDITION of Doppelmayer's best known astronomical work : his celestial atlas. The preliminary engraved leaves are : a 1st engraved title with full-page illustration by J.C. Reinsperger after J.J. Preisler showing Ptolemy, Copernicus, Keppler and Tycho Brahe discussing the planetary motions, a 2nd title with full engraved text and vignette and the list of plates. The 30 hand-coloured celestial maps show : the solar system, the cosmological systems of Copernicus, Tycho Brache and Riccioli, motions and phases of the planets, comet's orbital periods, cometary theories of Johannes Keppler, Edmund Halley, Isaac Newton, etc., star charts, a selenographic map, lunar and eccliptic theories, etc. The plates are nicely decorated with astronomical instruments, observatories etc.
