Description
Copper-engraving, 72,5 x 104 cm, hand-coloured (trimmed margins, light vertical and horizontal folds).
Under passe-partout, glass and large decorated gilt frame.

Double hemisphere world map with outstanding decoration figuring Hercule with the skin of the Nemean Lion and Atlas carrying the Eastern and Western hemispheres. At the top two decorative ribbons held by two angels. In the lower half : Northern and Southern celestial hemispheres, an armillary sphere as well as representations of the old Ptolemaic and the modern world system. The general design is influenced by J.B. Clouet's world map, published by Mondhare in 1775. Mondhare's map was intended to decorate libraries and salons of 18th Century aristocracy, depicting progress both in discoveries and scientific models of the universe. As such the map provides a fine depiction of the routes taken by modern explorers.
