2 copper engravings, 65 x 100 cm each, assembled and mounted on blue green paper with a total size of approx. 100 x 129 cm (browned, edges show traces of use and some tears).

Original chart of the Mediterranean Sea including the Adriatic Sea and the Gulf of Venice. The first sheet goes from Gibraltar to Sicily, the second from Italy to Alexandria. The total map renders the European continent with the coasts of France (from Nantes onward), Spain, Italy (without the heel) and Croatia; the African coasts from Agadir in Maroc to Tripoli and beyond in Libya; the Baleares-Isles, Sicily, Sardinia and Malta. With twenty inset maps of the principal harbours including Cadiz, Barcelona, Nice, Algiers, Palermo, Gibraltar, etc. The original map in one sheet, published in 1852 by James Imray (1803-1870), was three years later completed with new additions and resulted in this two sheet edition. As such it became one of the earliest charts published under the partnership with his son James Frederick Imray (1829-1891). With retailer's label of W. Jewitt of Liverpool, successors to Melling & Co.
