Description
In-f° : [20]-296 [i.e. 339]-[20] pp.; 1 pl. (numerous foxing, marginal dampstains, marginal wormholes in the beginning, some pp. slightly yellowed or browned, some stains).
17th Century binding : red morrocco, boards encircled with gilt and blind decorated fillets, gilt angular fleurons and a medallion in the center, gilt decorated ribbed spine, gilt gauffered edges (spine, joints, edges and corners restored, small wears, flyleaves renewed, handwritten note on the upper pastedown). Under modern case.

FIRST EDITION (a French edition was published the same year) of this important chorographic essay by Guicciardini (1521-1589), a Florentine merchant who lived in Antwerp. The title, coat-of-arms and portrait of Philipp II are contained in a wood-engraved portico decorated with six allegories. Illustrated with 17 double plates : a copper-engraved general map of the Low Countries and 16 woodcuts (except the plate of the Hôtel de ville of Antwerp), preceded by a title, figuring Antwerp's cathedral, plans, perspective views and maps (Leuven, Brussels, Mechelen, Amsterdam, Mons, Brugge...).
